Augmented Reality is not going away

Two years ago Augmented Reality (AR) was pitched as the next big thing in technology but it has been very slow to take off. We think this is because there has been a lack of ideas as to how to apply the technology and at the time the smartphones on the market were not quite up to the job. Also, other supporting technologies like Google Glass never got past BETA.

With the advances in smartphone technology, we are now seeing some really cool uses of AR technology beginning to emerge and as a communications company we are really excited about this.

One example of AR being used in a really exciting way, was by the UK tabloid press during the Poppy Appeal.

Print Week recently covered this in an article and explained how the campaign worked – “When readers scan the Legion’s poppy, which appears on newspaper mastheads, campaign posters and advertisements, using the Blippar app on their smartphones, the poppy turns into a ‘portal’ which offers access to pictures and videos of servicemen and women and stories of war, as well as encouraging people to donate to the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.
